Today, 21 Sep 2026, marks an important milestone for Vietnam’s capital market as FTSE Russell officially reclassifies Vietnam from Frontier to Secondary Emerging market status within the FTSE Global Equity Index Series (FTSE GEIS), effective from the market open.
At JSI, we are pleased to mark this milestone and recognise the continued efforts of Vietnam’s regulators, market participants and investors in advancing the country’s capital market.
-
- PHASED IMPLEMENTATION
To support an orderly transition, Vietnam’s inclusion in FTSE GEIS and associated indices will be implemented through four tranches based on the proportion of investability weight added:
-
- 21 Sepr 2026: 10%
- 22 Mar 2027: additional 20% — cumulative 30%
- 21 Jun 2027: additional 35% — cumulative 65%
- 20 Sep 2027: additional 35% — cumulative 100%
Following each tranche, FTSE Russell will assess the ability of index trackers to replicate the benchmark changes before proceeding with the subsequent tranche.
-
- GLOBAL INDEX REPRESENTATION
Vietnamese securities are now being included in major FTSE GEIS benchmarks, including the FTSE Emerging, FTSE Emerging All Cap, FTSE Global All Cap and FTSE All-World indices, with the inclusion being phased in from Sep 2026 through Sep 2027.
Based on FTSE Russell’s latest published estimates, using market data as of 21 Aug 2026, Vietnam is projected to represent approximately at full implementation:
-
- 0.488% of the FTSE Emerging All Cap Index
- 0.3089% of the FTSE Emerging Index
- 0.049% of the FTSE Global All Cap Index
- 0.0311% of the FTSE All-World Index
These figures represent the projected weights upon completion of the full 100% inclusion in Sep 2027 and are not the weights applicable immediately on 21 Sep 2026. At the initial 10% tranche, Vietnam’s indicative weight is approximately 0.049% in FTSE Emerging All Cap, 0.031% in FTSE Emerging, 0.0049% in FTSE Global All Cap and 0.0031% in FTSE All-World, based on the same FTSE Russell estimates.
The Sep 2026 FTSE review also identifies Vietnamese securities across the Large Cap, Mid Cap and Small Cap segments. Major companies including VCB, VIC, VHM, BID, HPG, FPT and VNM are among the Vietnamese securities included in the FTSE GEIS review, alongside other constituents.

- REFLECTING MARKET REFORMS
The reclassification reflects significant progress in Vietnam’s market infrastructure and accessibility, including the implementation of the Non-Prefunding (NPF) model, which removed the prefunding requirement for foreign institutional investors, the establishment of a formal process for handling failed trades, and progress in enabling access for global brokers.
JSI congratulates Vietnam’s regulators, exchanges, VSDC, securities companies, custodians, global brokers and all market participants who have contributed to this important milestone.
A NEW CHAPTER BEGINS FOR VIETNAM’S CAPITAL MARKET.
